Instrument Petting Zoo and WCRB Music Matters

Have you ever wanted to toot a flute? Slide a trombone? Bang on a drum?

The New Phil's Instrument Petting Zoo is your chance! Children of all ages (that includes you too, grown-ups!), are invited to meet and try the instruments of the orchestra. New Phil musicians guide you on how to hold the instrument and how to make a sound. The Instrument Petting Zoo is a fabulous introduction to all the instrument families!

Instrument Petting Zoos accompany each Family Discovery Concert. After watching New Phil musicians and the young guest artists play, your child will be inspired to try the instruments on their own! Discover a budding musician!

The Instrument Petting Zoo even travels! New Phil has traveled to many local preschools, presenting instrument demonstrations and an Instrument Petting Zoo. Special arrangements may also be made for an Instrument Petting Zoo to travel to your school. For more information on this program, please contact the New Phil.

WCRB Music Matters Program

Beginning in the 2007-2008 Season, the New Phil partnered with Classical 99.5 WCRB and the Massachusetts Teachers Association to bring "Music Matters" to local public elementary school children. "Music Matters", a project of WCRB, is a music education initiative, bringing New Phil musicians into classrooms to supplement students' exposure to music education.

The musicians perform instrument demonstrations, talk about the four instrument families and how each produces sound, and conduct an Instrument Petting Zoo. Students gain an appreciation for how music is made and discover the instruments of a symphony orchestra.
