NEW PHIL/JOHN HANCOCK MUSIC DISCOVERY PROGRAM AT PERRY SCHOOL
 |
The Perry School String Orchestra performs at the school show with New Phil Executive Director Adrienne Hartzell. |
Since the Fall of 2005, the New Phil has partnered with John Hancock Financial Services in an extensive music outreach & education project at the Perry Elementary School in South Boston. Members of the New Phil teach weekly classes including general music education, beginning recorder and Beginning & Intermediate Strings classes.
The program teaches a general knowledge of music based on exploration of songs, rhythm, beat, pitch, note-reading, and instrument demonstrations and petting zoos. In third grade, students put these skills to use when they begin to study the recorder. The fourth through sixth grade students are given the opportunity to study the violin, viola, or cello and to really begin to develop their musicianship skills.

In addition to regular classes, New Phil also brings special projects and opportunities to the budding musicians. In the program's first year a chorus of third - fifth graders performed "America the Beautiful" with the New Phil at its Gala Opening Classics Concert; members of the Strings Program performed side-by-side with New Phil musicians at the Annual Pops Concert & Auction; Maestro Ron Knudsen and New Phil players joined the Perry School at their year-end school show; and 50 Perry School singers and instrumentalists went to the John Hancock building in South Boston for a special performance and met the CEO!
It is the New Phil's goal to supplement students' academic education with music education that encourages creativity, builds self-confidence, enhances listening/discipline skills, and leaves a lasting appreciation for the arts.
