FAMILY CONCERTS
Since the beginning the New Phil has presented family programming.
Growing from one concert a year to three, New Phil Music Director
Ronald Knudsen and our in house narrators, music educator Kathryn
Denney and community outreach advocate Dawn Dreisbach have put together a unique format
for these programs. The concerts last approximately 1 hour.
The music for them is most often a student related work – narrated
piece or child soloist(s) and then the remainder of the program
is based on a piece that the orchestra is then currently preparing
for performance in a subscription concert. The piece, or part
of it, is presented in excerpts with a dialogue from one of
the narrators about what the kids are hearing, intermingled
with clapping of the rhythms they are going to hear, marching
to a brass tune, talking about dynamics, colors, instruments,
etc.
These concerts give children an opportunity to hear “real
live music” in a way that is accessible and fun. Our
Family Concerts are always followed by our Instrument Petting
Zoo where children of all ages are able to meet and try the
instruments of the orchestra.
The New Philharmonia Orchestra Family Concerts this season are sponsored by a generous gift from The Village Bank.
