Pärt: Cantus (in Memory of Benjamin Britten)
Dvorák: Violin Concerto
Haldan Martinson, violin
Sibelius: Symphony No. 2

From Francisco Noya
2015-2016 Conductor and Artistic Advisor

"We wanted to program a piece to honor the memory of Ron Knudsen. Pärt's Cantus (in memory of Benjamin Britten) is a perfect tribute. It's scored for just strings and one single bell - simple, yet moving. BSO’s Principal Second Violin Haldan Martinson was a close friend and colleague of Ron's. When we engaged Haldan, he suggested the Dvorák Violin Concerto. Finally, it's the 150th anniversary of Jean Sibelius's birth. We thought the Second Symphony would be a good choice: the orchestra hasn't performed the Symphony for a number of years and it's a large, monumental work - perfect for the talented musicians of the New Phil."
