NEW PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA MUSICIANS (A-J)

* Manny Abrams, who has a Bachelor's degree from Harvard, and a Juris Doctorate from the Boston University School of Law, is a retired partner from a Boston law firm. Manny has played the violin in Greater Boston community orchestras since 1970 and is a founding member of the New Phil. He credits his mother for his musical inspirations along with his teachers Harry Dubbs and Bob Gomberg.

* Before joining the New Phil in 1995, Djalai Babazadeh has played viola under Maestro Knudsen’s since 1981. She is a music and strings teacher with the Waltham public schools, and also works as a freelance player. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Nevada, and her M.A. at Lesley College. In addition to music, her interests include running, tennis, biking and arts and crafts.

Cellist Kendra Bauer an English teacher at Lowell High School in Lowell, MA, joined the New Phil in 2007. She hails from Greenville, South Carolina, but made Greater Boston her home after graduating from Brandeis University. When she is not teaching or playing the cello, Kendra coaches women's crew on the Merrimack.

* Cellist Greg Birne has been with the New Phil since its first season in 1995. He has 15 years experience in Greater Boston-area community orchestras, including four years with Maestro Knudsen and the Newton Symphony. A graduate of Boston University and the Cornell University Law School, he is an attorney employed by the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance. In his free time, he enjoys bicycling, reading, cooking and photography.

*♪ A self-employed accounting management consultant, Leila Blaylock is a member of the violin section. Her Bachelor of Business Administration degree is from U-Mass. Amherst, and her MBA is from Babson College. She has been with the New Phil since its beginning. Other community orchestra experience includes the Brockton Symphony and Quincy Symphony. Her interests include gardening, travel, cooking and sewing.

John Bourne, horn, is a professor at Olin College and Babson College and is also the executive director of the Sloan Consortium, an organization that works with online education. He moved to New England in 2000 from Nashville, TN to help start Olin College. He recently started playing horn for the New Phil in 2006 after a 30+ year hiatus and has enjoyed getting involved in the music community in the Boston area.

* Kalman Brin grew up in Russia in a family of violinists. Kalman, a violinist in the New Phil since its inception, holds a degree in Physics, and now works for General Electric. Prior to the New Phil, Kalman played in community orchestras for many years in Moscow and the Greater Boston area. When not working or rehearsing, he likes to travel and explore different parts of the world.

Jerry Cadden, a Celtic ethnomusicologist from the deep South, plays principal tuba for the NPO, and is music director of the BayColonyBrass. He has been with the NPO since 2001. He received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and his graduate degrees from the University of Chicago. Besides music, he says his hobbies are “arranging music (totally different from playing!) and working on motorcycles.”

Margaret Cain, violin, began playing with the New Phil in 2005. A retired analytical chemist, Margaret has been inspired musically by her violin teacher Arturo Delmoni and conductor Mark Churchill. She loves being outdoors, particularly for gardening or birding and also sings in her church choir. Margaret is happy to be with the New Phil "making high quality music with fine people close to home".

* An Interventional Radiologist with Beverly Radiology Associates, Eric Cortell says he has been playing timpani with the New Phil "forever". His previous 16 years' experience under Maestro Knudsen's direction includes time with the Longwood Orchestra and other Greater Boston-area community orchestras, during which time he met his wife, NPO violinist Julia Wong. A classical music aficionado, Eric has passed his love of music onto his two young daughters, who are often heard humming their new favorite work at preschool. Eric is a graduate of UPenn and Tufts School of Medicine and when he is not working or playing enjoys his family, travel and food.

Violinist Dawn Dreisbach works in development at Walnut Hill School. A graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy, she attended the American College in Paris, Vassar College and the University of Cincinnati. In addition to playing in the New Phil, which she joined in 1996, she is engaged in the performing arts through her acting and play-writing.

Jessie Epstein, violin, joined the New Phil at the start of the 2006-2007 Season. Originally from Maine, she earned an MFA from the University of Connecticut in sculpture and has shared her passion for art with her students. In addition to teaching art and music as a part of the New Phil's outreach program at Perry School, you may also hear Jessie narrating at the Museum of Science Planetarium. She lives in Waltham with her husband, son, and dogs and outside of music and art she enjoys astronomy, knitting, running, yoga, and building elaborate sculptural installations out of ice.

* Josee Erlandson, cellist, has previous experience under Maestro Knudsen’s direction since 1986, and in 1995 she joined the New Philharmonia. She is a graduate of Framingham State College and a teacher at the Wellesley Montessori School. Away from work and rehearsals, she likes playing with her son Jacob, golf, running and cooking, and is a self-professed Boston/New England sports fan.

Bruce Falby, flute

Sandra Fallon is a French horn player who joined the New Phil in 2005. She is originally from Long Island, but is living in MA while she writes her dissertation in musicology at Brandeis University. Lessons learned from her high school band teacher Mr. Bernstein have stayed with her through her years of music-making. When she is not writing Sandra spends her time tutoring and teaching classes. Her non-musical interests include soccer, tennis, golf and salsa dancing.

Teresa Fiorenza, violin

A graduate of Dartmouth College and the University of Minnesota, Tracy Gleason has been playing oboe in the New Phil since 2002, plus three years previous experience with other Greater Boston-area community orchestras. She is a professor in the Psychology Department at Wellesley College who spends all her spare time happily chasing her twins.

* Prior to joining the NPO in 1995, violinist Anita Gram has played under Maestro Knudsen's direction since 1985. A psychologist, her educational credentials include degrees from the University of Kansas at Lawrence, and the University of Texas at Austin. Anita's most memorable musical moment is performing the Verdi Requiem with the New Phil shortly after September 11.

Cellist Adrienne Hartzell serves as both Executive Director and Principal Cello of the New Phil. She has a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from New England Conservatory and can be heard frequently live and in recordings with Boston Baroque as well as other free-lance ensembles. After teaching and playing music, Adrienne went back to school to study law, has a JD from Suffolk University Law School and maintains a small private law practice.

Nicholas Hays, cello, is a senior at Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering in Needham studying Electrical and Computer Engineering. Originally from Texas, he has enjoyed playing in a variety of orchestras and small ensembles for the past 11 years.

Sabrina Hepburn, French horn, joined the New Phil in its 2006-2007 Season. An Environmental Consultant with TRC, Sabrina attended Dartmouth College and the University of Michigan, earning her Master's degrees in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology as well as Horn Performance. Sabrina loves Brahms, Mahler's 5th Symphony, and Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1. Other than music she enjoys bird watching, reading, skiing, traveling and generally exploring the great outdoors.

* William Hollman has played violin under Maestro Knudsen for 27 years, and has been with the New Phil for the last ten. He did his undergraduate work at Brandeis University, continued his studies at Harvard Graduate School of Education, and works in marketing for Dictronics, Inc.
